Funerals

The loss of a loved one is always a sad experience and we aim to make funerals as helpful and supportive as possible.

Funerals can be conducted by the Vicar (or one of his colleagues) in church or at a local crematorium, or many people choose to use the church for the main part of the service, followed by the final committal at the crematorium or St Andrew’s Burial Ground.

A church funeral allows a little more time to enable relatives and friends to begin their mourning and for an expression of thanksgiving for the life of the deceased.

The first step in booking a funeral is usually to ring your local funeral director, who will contact the Vicar for you. The Vicar will always visit before a funeral, to offer help and support and to discuss details of the service.

You can also find general information about funerals in the Church of England and suggestions for funeral hymns and the most usual funeral readings.

Burials in the Burial Ground

Anyone who resided in the parishes of St Andrew’s or Christ Church Eaton is entitled to be buried in the Eaton Burial Ground on Church Lane. As there is limited space remaining for new graves, it is unlikely that requests for burial from those outside the parish would be accepted, unless the deceased was a member of the two churches or has a close connection with the parishes (e.g. there are existing close family members already buried in the Burial Ground). Because of the limited space, it is no longer possible to reserve a plot. For any queries, please contact the Church Office who can advise.

Any proposed headstones or memorial tablets need to be first approved by the Vicar. Your Stonemason or Funeral Director will arrange the application on your behalf. The Diocese of Norwich Churchyard Regulations cover the types of memorials that are permitted, as well as providing guidance on what other items are allowed to be introduced.

If you are trying to locate a grave, please contact the Church Office who will be able to assist. Please note there is a statutory fee of £39 to conduct a search in the Burial Register.
